Youth Program

The Village Summer Enrichment Program

Our Summer Enrichment Program is designed to augment classroom learning with life skills education in order to provide the youth of underserved communities with the best chance for overall success in life.

The program provides:

  • A constructive, educational summer break activity for children; engaging their brains and keeping them active.
  • Education on the life skills required to live successful, healthy, well-balanced lives – a key to breaking the cycle of poverty.
  • An avenue for community involvement, volunteerism and mentorship in a flexible, easy to accommodate way.

The program includes workshops with guest speakers, discussions and exercises on:

Life planning & goal setting

Guest speakers share inspirational life stories of overcoming poverty and adversity to become successful, fulfilled individuals. Facilitators work with participants to uncover what it is they truly want out of life and discuss priorities, character and integrity, and how to set the right goals for the desired outcome.

Thoughts, attitudes & beliefs

We work with participants to understand the impact that their thoughts, attitudes and beliefs have on their experiences in life. By understanding the importance of the way they view themselves and the world around them, they are empowered to make positive changes in their daily lives.

Health & wellness

Guest speakers educate participants on a variety of topics surrounding health and wellness including diet and nutrition, fitness, sleep and emotional wellbeing. In so doing, we arm participants with the knowledge to improve the quality of their lives. By developing a healthier lifestyle, the youth learn that they can reduce the incidence of sickness and disease for themselves and in their families.

Personality types & learning styles

Participants assess their personality types and use this self-awareness to leverage their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. Understanding the various personality types help participants interact constructively with varying personalities at home, at school and in the community. Understanding their personality’s learning style helps participants improve as students.

Personal finances

Guest speakers expose participants to the world of money and finance. Facilitators discuss principles of effective money management, credit and credit scores, paychecks and deductions, budgeting and concepts such as living within your means, good debt verses bad debt and much more. Participants are awakened to the reality that money, in fact, does not grow on trees.

Body & Self image

Guest speakers discuss the importance of your image – how do you want people to view you? Where do you see yourself down the line? Is your current image consistent with that? What is appropriate in the workplace? Facilitators discuss peer pressure verses independence. Participants create vision boards for how they see their ideal selves as working adults.

Principles of public speaking

Participants develop confidence and poise as they learn the importance of public speaking and how the principles of public speaking can be applied in many aspects of their lives, from school, to community, to career.

Etiquette & decorum

Knowing the ins and outs of proper etiquette eludes most of us! As our youth become academically prepared for college and careers, this component can make the difference between their sense of belonging or feeling inadequate. Participants are educated on the basics of etiquette and deportment in dining, the workplace, conversation and more, giving them the confidence they need to feel comfortable in a variety of settings.

Young Adults Program

The Village Enrichment Program

The Village Enrichment Program is designed to assist young adults in transitioning successfully into the workforce, providing education and training on the skills necessary to enhance their chosen career path and forge independent, productive, impactful lives. The Village comes together in the form of teachers, business leaders and mentors, and provides instruction and guidance to young adults seeking to improve their lives.

The Enrichment Program curriculum is constructed around effective principles of self-determination, with workshops that focus on the practical application of life and job search skills that aid in the participant’s ability to improve herself and the lives of her family. We impact generational change, as these young adults become parents, passing on what they have learned to their children.

The Los Angeles Leadership Academy (LALA) is a K-12 charter school dedicated to preparing urban secondary students to succeed in college or their chosen career paths, to live fulfilling, self-directed lives, and to be effective in creating a just and humane world.

This is how we see the world at The Village as well, so we have successfully partnered with LALA and to provide a Summer Enrichment Program for girls since 2012.
